Smart Design will host Design Green Now’s first Design Jam, serving as the test company to uncover insights and opportunities for the sustainable workplace.

Smart Design is committed to a more sustainable and responsible future and the best place to begin the work towards that future is with ourselves.


On June 25th, Smart Design in NYC will play host and subject of Design Green Now’s first ever, invitation-only Design Jam — a 40-person workshop that will look to uncover insights and opportunities for the sustainable workspace. These insights will serve as the foundation for DGN’s next web-based design competition. Areas to be examined include basic needs, communication, collaboration within the office, and personal work activities.


A post-event wrap-up will be available at Smart News. shortly after the event.

As decreed by Mayor Gavin Newsom, San Francisco Design Week will take place June 15-21, 2009.  It is a growing celebration of San Francisco Bay Area design to include an opening reception, Communication Arts’ 50th Anniversary exhibit, Business and Design forums, Design Film Night, Pecha Kucha night, studio tours, exhibitions, lectures, mixers, and a closing party. The week is hosted by the San Francisco chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design, in developing partnerships with AIASF, IDSASF, IxDASF and other San Francisco design groups, organizations, museums, businesses, and schools.

Richard Whitehall, VP of Industrial Design and the lead in Smart Design’s initiative on ’Responsible Design’, will speak at The Future of Global Product Design in Barcelona, Spain.

Richard Whitehall is set to present “Moving from Green Products to Sustainable Experiences” on June 4th at 11:15am in Barcelona as part of the prominent European design conference, The Future of Global Product Design.


Moving From Greener Products to Sustainable Consumer Experiences
The environmental and social impact of a particular product is often invisible to the consumer. This makes sustainability a difficult issues for designers and manufacturers to tackle. Examples of green product design have stimulated debate in the blog community but how much impact have they made on what we buy and how we live?
 
His session will cover:



  • Shifting the focus from individual products to experiences and systems

  • Convincing consumers to choose sustainable solutions

  • Enabling sustainable consumer behavior and product use

  • Investigating the need to transcend traditional discipline boundaries and assumptions to create long term business opportunities


Richard leads the initiative on Responsible Design at Smart Design and has presented on this topic at Design Green Now and the Designer’s Accord Town Hall.


Objectified: Barcelona Premiere
In addition to the presentation, Smart Design will be featured in Objectified, the new documentary from Helvetica director, Gary Hustwit, about manufactured objects. The widely-acclaimed film will have its Barcelona premiere at the historic theater Cines Alexandra at 8pm on June 4.
