Omron HIP Pedometer & Packaging:
Walk This Way!
Looking to expand their presence in the US market, Omron Healthcare asked us to create a hip pedometer that would appeal to a wide range of consumers. Competitive analysis revealed that a compelling design would elevate and differentiate their product significantly as the pedometer market had, until then, seen little innovation.
Our design team conducted thorough research and analysis of today’s active lifestyle, pop culture, fashion accessories, and trends in consumer electronics. Consumers participated in emotional mapping and perception studies as part of an iterative design process. Synthesizing this feedback, the team arrived at a stylish yet uncluttered solution, keeping the device simple while appearing fresh and motivating.
After a successful design phase, Omron enlisted Smart’s brand communication expertise to create the packaging for the entire line of pedometers sold in the US. Consumer-friendly language, user-centered photography, and a personal tone encourage an individual connection to the product, while colored-coded icons are used to differentiate product features across the line.
