Johnson & Johnson Operating Gowns:
Breathable Protection in the OR

A division of Johnson & Johnson specializing in absorbent products and materials research developed a new disposable material for an operating room (OR) gown that was breathable while still providing a barrier to viruses. We were asked to develop a new Advanced Gown prototype for OR’s utilizing features of the new material.

Our team of designers and bio-mechanic experts immersed themselves in the environment, process, and products relating to the OR. First-hand observation of actual procedures for cases such as hip replacement, coronary bypass, and tumor removal allowed the product development team to execute a task analysis of the gown in use. Based on this research the team designed a gown and folding methods for gowning, de-gowning and disposal procedures that positively impact every step of the product life-cycle. The resulting, patented design has been used as a demonstration tool to promote the advanced material developed by Johnson & Johnson.
